Haven't posted in several days...

What's up with that? I had a semi-excuse during NaNoWriMo but since December first it has just been "Slackersville" baby. My bad!

My son turned 33 on the second of the month. I don't know where the years have gone. Hell, 20 years ago I was 33 and in graduate school. My life has been shot out of a cannon at a frantic pace. My goodness gracious!

This week we have been celebrating Stephanie's birthday. She will be 51 on the 12th. Yesterday my mom took Steph, my baby sister Barb and me to lunch at Canon Grill, one of Steph's favorite restaurants. We got to gab and have a great good time. I am having fun getting together just the four of us and want to do it more often. I will talk to mom, Barb and Steph about such a plan. It would be funarito!

Sunday for Steph's actual birthday we are going to Wendy's for little chicken sammies, fries and drinks. Then we will be going to a local bakery called "Silvek's" for Steffie's birthday sweet. It will be a fun but chilly day as the temperature is supposed to drop a LOT!!! BRRRR!!!

Today I read the umpteenth blog post by a writer/author (I refuse to differentiate) who was worried about establishing her writer's platfom. This involves being very active vis a vie social networks and blogsville. The idea being that you can't get a book off of the ground unless you have a "writer's platform." This is all well and good, but you have to have a book before it can get off of the ground. If you don't get the book written (I am guilty of lazy editing) then all the writer's platforms in the WORLD will not make you have a viable product when the time comes.

I realize that publishing houses are not investing in new writer's like they once were and the if you go the "indie" route you have to market yourself. Well, I am all for marketing yourself and I am studying some authors that I consider to be masters at marketing themselves but they all have books written and if you don't have anything to market more than your name well, I am afraid it is a moot point indeed. Hey, that's just me. Someone will probably bust my chops for having this opinion but so be it. I am entitled to an opinion and I have no fear in stating it clearly.

In the meantime I need to get back to my writing an quit "fadoodling" around. I want to have something to market besides my winning smile.

Exactly. :-)
You are absolutely right. And honestly, even a huge platform probably isn't going to do much for sales until you have *more than one* book out. To make any money at all, you need a backlist...or that's what I've surmised from watching the writers who are making money (both indie and traditional, and I've had that substantiated by both). So while writers do need to start building platform before they're published, the bulk of time needs to be spent *writing*. As you say, if you have nothing to sell, everything else is a moot point.

Speaking of which - I should be writing... ;-) Many words to you!

re: exactly...
We may be a generation apart but we think a lot a like, although your mind is much more organized than my mind is, WHEW! I wish you many words too.

I am going to try to write some of my very bad flash/short fiction and then after the holidays go back to my novels. I am very scattered right now and while I can MAKE myself write I cannot always MAKE myself write even "semi-well." LOL!

Cheers to you,
