Being an Indie Author or Not...

I write. I am an author. I don't play the game of, if you don't have a book out you are not an author. BS! I have been published in several publications. I have had many bylines. I am an author and have worked hard to be one. Quite frankly, the dictionary describes an author as a noun, "a writer of a book, article, or report," among other definitions and as a transitive verb, " be the author of (a book or piece of writing)" with other transitive verb definitions as well. Thus a writer is an author despite the semantics games some people want to play.

I have written a novel, now whether that novel will ever see the light of day is another story but I have written a novel and in my opinion it is a decent piece of writing. That opinion is shared by others who have read it. The novel is still ROUGH and needs work but I have finally after many years of writing created a novel. Thank you NaNoWriMo. Fiction writing is hard work but NaNoWriMo helped me to plow through and write my novel. Now the editing, rewriting and additional editing come into play.

I would love to have my novel printed by a traditional publisher. That would be a dream come true but my story is a quirky little novel that may never get a second glance, not because it doesn't have some grain of merit but because it doesn't fit traditional modes or genres of writing. It is a very creative piece of fiction that has its own criteria and doesn't follow the path of standard fiction.

I have considered going Indie with my novel and have been reading everything involved in being an Indie Author, authors Katie Salidas www.katiesalidas.com/search/label/Self-Publishing and Jamie DeBree bookbiz.jamiedebree.com/ have written extensively about what is involved in being self-published. My head is in a spin trying to wrap my brain around everything. Beyond the initial costs involved there is the whole issue of formatting. When I read about that in a blog post by Jamie DeBree my brain just shut down, it couldn't comprehend all of the work involved, like what you have to do to make quotation marks come out right. Gosh, my book is loaded with dialogue, quotation marks could take me a lifetime all by themselves. WHEW!

I am a writer, I know I am a decent writer. I know my writing needs lots of editing because if for no other reason I am the QUEEN of the comma splice. Punctuation is my downfall and sometimes grammar gets me too. I may never get my novel published but I have written it. I am making it better and I have a sense of satisfaction that it is headed toward completion. Beyond that, who knows what will happen.

In the meantime, I will write stories, personal essays, articles and general nonsense because writing IS in my DNA and I simply must write, it is my life.

Ciao!

Thanks! Next time you stop in, sign your name so I will know who is visiting and reading. I mostly write about the mundane but sometimes I have "real" posts about writing or stories.

Ciao,
