Writing is hard or is it...

Author Dean Wesley Smith is writing a book titled, "Killing the Sacred Cows of Publishing." He is letting his blog readers in one his chapters as he writes and revises them. Chapter seven is titled, "Writing is Hard." www.deanwesleysmith.com/ . It is the final chapter of the first part of the book, which is composed of "The Basic Myths of Publishing."

In this chapter Smith obliterates any excuses one can make about writing being hard. He discusses how we begin the thought process about writing being hard and then discusses why writing is not hard. I will say the man makes several good points but sometimes writing still FEELS hard and that according to Smith is a self-made obstacle. I have to chew on what he has said for a while.

I do work on my writing every day. It is not always coherent but it is always done (except for the two weeks I had the cold from Hell, not much writing during that time at all). My fingers don't always cooperate with my brain and sometimes I write the most awful jibberish and sometimes my writing is very sophomoric but it gets done. I was once committed to one thousand words a day but dropped that to five hundred words a day as my illness has progressed. Smith contends that if I would write a concerted two hundred fifty words a day I would be writing ninety thousand words a year and would complete a novel a year. I believe his math, I am not going to check it but wonder, is it really as easy as he makes it sound or is it as hard as it feels to me. I think the answer is somewhere in the middle.

I will be buying Smith's book on "Killing the Sacred Cows of Publishing" and will study it. I think that I can learn a lot from him. My writing is not the same as his but the principles are the same and that is what matters in my most humble opinion.

So now it is time to tie up the loose ends of this blog post and encourage you to go to Smith's blog, read, learn and take notes. There are powerful lessons to be learned there.
