I have been writing...

about writing. I have been writing about writing a LOT but I haven't been doing much actual writing. It is easier to write about the process, write about other authors, editors, agents, peeps and avoid really sitting down and writing much of anything myself. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?

I have written about how other authors have said that writing is not hard, that I can write or not write - whatever, that my writing has worth and I shouldn't be writing for free. Yes, I have been carrying on quite the conversation about writing and yet, unless it involves the little dog and life at SageMoon Cottage not much has been written by Ardee-ann Eichelmann writer extraordinaire. Ok, I am lying about the extraordinaire part although I have written some things that weren't half bad. (No snarky comments please about my writing being ALL bad!)

I have come to the realization that I don't have the money to self-publish my books. I mean not only do I not have the money for a cover artist or editor but I don't have the money for an ISBN. There are other costs associated with the whole process and well, I can't afford them. I think my writing is really good. I can't afford to sell it myself. I have a lot of work to do to get my work ready for agent queries (not that I don't have a lot of work to do for potential self-publishing). I just keep finding myself running into a wall. I am pretty sure I have constructed that wall myself. I am pretty sure that I am my own stumbling block. I am NEVER going to get ANYWHERE if I don't start writing again.

I have a venue for my storytelling. I don't get paid for my stories IN FACT, I have to pay and my family has to pay to see me read my stories to an audience. It looks good that SOMEONE wants my stories and is willing to put them on a radio program but when I have to pay to go read my own stories I kind of think it isn't worth it. I deserve to get something more than a free t-shirt (that doesn't even come in my size) out of the deal if you know what I mean. Harlan Ellison preaches, "Pay the writer." I need to heed his wisdom.

Interestingly enough, if I had been well enough and smart enough I could have had a paying writing job that went to someone else who was ahead of the curve on me. I missed my opportunity and need to figure out how to make a new one that brings in some money. I really am a decent writer, if one takes the word of people who have wanted my work for free. Ahem!

I need to overlook the stupid barriers and just write. It will be ready for query letters and I truly believe that my writing will be good enough for traditional publishing even though that industry has been kicked below the belt lately. They want the stories of murderers and thieves but that is because they know lurid stories will sell. In the meantime, they are overlooking some GREAT novels because they don't want to gamble while they are so wobbly at the present. I know that are overlooking great novels because I am seeing them being self published because traditional publishing has taken a pass on the book presented. I love what is happening in indie publishing. I just wish I could afford to get in on it. Maybe something will happen so that I can. We shall see. In the meantime I need to start writing and not just writing about writing. It is a good place to start. If I fine tune my craft something good is BOUND to HAPPEN. I believe that with all my heart.

So here is to writing, not just babbling about the process and what someone else is doing or saying, although I would like to do some more posts about what some folks are up to, there is a LOT of talent out there just waiting to be discovered and published. There are indie authors galore. I love reading their writing and interviews. In the meantime, I need to get off of my dead a** and get some work done. That is a fact Jack!

Re: You're wrong about one thing...
Excellent! I'll look forward to reading it. :-)
